Saturday Oct. 15 - The Possums travelled to Greenville, SC for face the Griffins. After a minor mishap involving a 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood limo (UT Orange) most of KRFC arrived at the pitch ready for an afternoon of rugby. The game started with Knoxville receiving the opening kickoff and after both teams exchanged possession, Possum prop Shane Randolph took a pass out wide and rumbled across the try line to give Knoxville the early lead. Greenville pinned the possums deep in their own territory and a handling error lead to an easy Greenville try to tie the game. Knoxville answered back be stealing a Greenville line out and getting the ball to the 2 m line before Brad Lokitz took the ball from the back of a ruck and dove over the try line. Once again Greenville answered back as their Fly-Prop broke across the line to even the score. Knoxville scored again when 8 man and captain Wayne Chermely broke free for a 20 m try. Rookie flanker John Patriarch made a long run but was tackled just short of the try line to end the half, score 19-19. The second half opened with Knoxville advancing the ball deep into Greenville territory before taking advantage of a Griffin penalty to get the ball out wide where outside center Panagiotis “Sox” Tzerefos dotted the ball down. Greenville’s larger pack was able to take a 5 m lineout and maul it over the line to take the score to 24-24. A penalty kick and opportunistic Greenville try gave Greenville and 32-24 advantage with minutes to play. The possums kept battling and got a late try when Brad Lokitz scored his second try of the match after racing down the field and scooping up a pass from wing Austin Hamilton to take the score to 32-29 in favor of Greenville. Knoxville would get once more chance but were unable to mount an attack and the game ended 32-29.

Oct 22 Knoxville, TN – On a rare Friday night meeting, the River Valley Vipers (Huntington WV), came to town for a clash under the lights against the Possums. Prior commitments kept the Vipers from traveling with a full side. Possums, Old Boys, and local players alike jumped in to help fill out the visitors side for the match. A hard hitting affair, as it was last year, saw the home side control the pace and scoring. A great opportunity for playing time for all Possums before next weeks double match day in Nashville. A big thanks for the Vipers that did make the trip, and to KRFC sponsors Bearden Beer Market and Eagle Distributing for hosting the social.

Friday October 9th: The Huntington Rugby Club rolled into town for a rare Night match under the lights. Schumpert Park hosted a double-header of rugby action that saw UT take on UNC Greensboro with an 7PM kickoff. Tornado Watch and driving rain held up the first match due to three stoppages from lightning strikes. The Possums finally got to take the pitch close to 9:30pm in a light rain. The new fields at Schumpert Park held up extremely well for there to have been quite a few inches of rain to fall prior to and an earlier match to be played. The waterproof rugby ball unfortunately has still not been developed, which of course means knock-ons were aplenty on the night, resulting in lots of scrums.
