December 10, 2009

Group Photo

Five teams braved the weather this past Saturday for a Santa Claus 7s first: 2 inches of snow. Gastonia and Louisville Women traveled the furthest along with Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Knoxville Women. The day started out with freezing temperatures and a weigh-. The field had so much snow on it that it couldn’t be lined: flags marked the boundaries.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Possums win 29-3

October 8, 2009

Friday October 9th: The Huntington Rugby Club rolled into town for a rare Night match under the lights.  Schumpert Park hosted a double-header of rugby action that saw UT take on UNC Greensboro with an 7PM kickoff. Tornado Watch and driving rain held up the first match due to three stoppages from lightning strikes.  The Possums finally got to take the pitch close to 9:30pm in a light rain.  The new fields at Schumpert Park held up extremely well for there to have been quite a few inches of rain to fall prior to and an earlier match to be played.  The waterproof rugby ball unfortunately has still not been developed, which of course means knock-ons were aplenty on the night, resulting in lots of scrums.

Heart of Dixie Tournament: Possums go 1-0-1

Knoxville 7 – Nashville 12

September 26, 2009

In an absolute slugfest,  the Possums come away with a Loss but with heads held high.

Playing in Nashville at the TN Prep. School Football field the Possums showed up with quite a few less than a full 22 man roster, with many members home sick or out of town.  Two weeks worth of rain had the field ready for a muddy encounter.  Greasy ball and great forward play from both sides set the stage for a back and forth match. KRFC 22 – Chatt 21

September 20, 2009

KRFC v Chattanooga Fall 2009 043b

Sept 19- The expected rain held off Saturday and the sun actually was out for a while, lending an added dimension of heat and humidity to the first match of the fall season for the Possums.

Taking on long time foe Chattanooga for the third time this calendar year, the Possums came out with a bit of rust to knock off for sure.  It took the first ten minutes of the opening half to finally get on the board.  Between knock ons on balls being “held up” in goal all day the Possums left quite a few try’s on the field.

With lots of hard earned line breaks and even harder tackles and scrappy rucks the first half ended with a 10 point lead for the home team.   As it was a non Matrix match there were lots of subs coming of the bench for the Possums in this first hit out.  Quite a few playing their first match for KRFC.   Chattanooga held tight and quickly scored two tries of their own with conversions to get the score to 14-15.  After a very close help up in goal call for the Possums resulted in a 95m Chatt. break to take the lead 21-15.  The Possums answered the call with little time left by a try and conversion to take the lead 22-21.  It was a hard fought match with both sides showing promise of attacking ability.

The Possums head West to the Capital to take on Nashville A&B sides Saturday Sept 26.
