Possums defeat Redfish 33-0

The Baton Rouge Redfish traveled 12 hours to take on the Knoxville Possums as part of a cross-over matrix match in the newly formed True South GU.  This is the first time the two team have played each other.

During the first 20minutes, both teams displayed solid defense with Baton Rouge winning the time of possession battle for most of the first half.   However, Knoxville played solid defense and stole several set pieces to keep Baton off the score board. Knoxville played for field position and used the boot to kick for territory.  Panagiotis Tzerefos’s Greek boot was on fire and he was able to pin Baton Rouge deep inside their 22 several times.

The momentum began to change with about 15 min left in the first half as Knoxville ran across three tries. Hayden Williams scored the first try out wide off of a midfield set piece. On the ensuing kickoff, Trace Fuller went untouched for a 75 meter try. On the final play of the first half, Knoxville’s pack stole a Baton Rouge line out  at midfield and was able to string together several quick phases before captain Wayne Chermely scored out wide.

The Possums controlled the game in the second half with solid defense and kicking leading to two more tries. Lock Brian Evans scored on a pick a go and inside center Pierre Steenekamp scored on a crash ball. Despite the 12 hours trip and only bringing 15 players, Baton Rouge put up a solid fight throughout the entire match. This will certainly be a tough match for Knoxville when they have to travel down to Baton Rouge. Thanks to everyone who made it out for the game!
