Abernathy to join Chermely and USA South for NACRA Playoffs

March 11, 2013 (Knoxville, Tennessee) – Knoxville Men’s Rugby Player and Former Volunteer Matt Abernathy has been selected to represent USA Rugby South in the North American Caribbean Rugby Association Championship Tournament.


Matt will join 22 other players from the south (TN, AL, FL, GA, MS, LA) including fellow Possum Wayne Chermely when the team travels to Nassau, Bahamas to face off against the Bahamas National Team in second round of the NACRA playoffs. The South advanced to the playoffs with a 50-23 win over Mexico in Marietta, GA in January, and beat Jamaica in the first round 29-12 in February. The winner of the USA South vs Bahamas match will face the winner of Cayman and two-time defending NACRA champion Bermuda.

Abernathy started playing rugby in 2001 for Brentwood High School in Nashville during the inaugural year of the Middle Tennessee High School League. After graduation he attended the University of Tennessee and played 5 years for the Volunteers and was selected to play with USA Rugby South Collegiate All Star Team 3 times. In 2008 Matt was awarded a scholarship to the Down Under Rugby Program in Sydney, Australia and spent a year playing internationally.  After returning to the states he has played with both Nashville (2009-11) and Knoxville (2008-09 and 2011-13) Rugby Clubs.
