Oct 22 Knoxville, TN –  On a rare Friday night meeting, the River Valley Vipers (Huntington WV), came to town for a clash under the lights against the Possums.  Prior commitments kept the Vipers from traveling with a full side.  Possums, Old Boys, and local players alike jumped in to help fill out the visitors side for the match.  A hard hitting affair, as it was last year, saw the home side control the pace and scoring.  A great opportunity for playing time for all Possums before next weeks double match day in Nashville.  A big thanks for the Vipers that did make the trip, and to KRFC sponsors Bearden Beer Market and Eagle Distributing for hosting the social.

Heart of Dixie – Possums Return from Huntsville with Two Wins

The possums traveled to Huntsville, AL for the annual Heart of Dixie tournament to start the 2010 fall season.  In the first game Knoxville faced the Birmingham Vulcans who recently made the jump to D2.  Knoxville committed an early penalty and allowed the Vulcans to take a 3-0 lead on a penalty kick.  The rest of the match belonged to the Possums as they scored 38 unanswered points.  Knoxville rucked well and was able to get clean ball out to the backs who moved the ball well and had several long runs.  Highlights included tries from the speedy and shifty rookies Austin Hamilton and Ruvim Bulkhak and from Oscar “the ageless wonder” Dostar who played well all day at tight head prop. Fly half Panagiotis “Sox” Tzerefos was 4/6 on conversions.  In the second game Knoxville faced an upstart Western Kentucky team.  Once again Knoxville played well in all phases of the game and came out on top 40-10.  Overall it was a good weekend that allowed a Knoxville team featuring several new players to gel.  After missing the entire 2009 season with a knee injury Ryan “Rooster” Miller returned with a vengeance and played two full matches at hooker.  The weekend also saw two new players, Doug Sharp and Michael Dey, get their first live rugby action.
