Knoxville, TN…..June 27th marked the date of the 7th annual high school 7s rugby tournament hosted by the Knoxville Rugby Club and the first event ever to be held at the brand new Tommy Schumpert Park. Thirteen teams from Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee braved the heat to make this a very successful albeit hot event. The morning consisted of pool play that ended with the Hoggs of Charlotte, NC, and Maryville both finishing the morning competition with perfect 3-0 records.
The afternoon break featured a skills challenge competition featuring speed, kicking distance and kick accuracy. Theo Echols of Starr’s Mills won the 50m dash, Michael Franklin of the Cherokee Barbarians had the longest kick and Benjamin Peagler of Central won the drop kicking for post competition. After the break the girls’ division saw Oak Ridge defeating South Doyle in a best of three series to claim the girls’ Cup. The boys were seeded based on pool play results and placed into either the Cup or Bowl brackets for the knock-out round.
The Bowl bracket featured an all SMAC final with South Doyle defeating Oak Ridge 22-0 to claim the trophy. In the Cup final, the Hoggs, got past Maryville with a score of 12-5 to repeat as the 2009 Smoky Mountain 7s U-19 Champions. Special thanks to our tournament and season sponsors: the Sports Locker, Tennessee Orthopedic Clinic, Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation.
