Match Report

Knoxville RFC vs. Atlanta Old White RFC 02/03/07

On a cold but sunny day in February we traveled down to Atlanta for a rematch with our arch-nemesis Old White RFC. After the drubbing we took last spring our boys were fired up for a rematch and this time we decided to bring most of our back line just in case. After the lucky few took a short detour to “the pie shop”, and then to the wrong pitch, we all managed to meet up at Old White’s field, just in time to watch their A-side get beat up by Life University. That was all the inspiration we needed. Selections were made, jerseys were put on (eventually!!) and then it was on like donkey kong. I’ll be the first to admit that we did not play very good rugby for the first 30-40 minutes, but we still managed to get ahead 14-10 by half time, thanks to a couple of tries and the boot of Dale T.

In the second half the boys from Knoxville had honed in on where we needed to improve and did a good job of taking advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves. There were plenty of try-scoring openings, some of which went begging, but in the end thanks to some smart rugby and better defence we finished it out with a win. The final score of 26-10 could have easily been higher if not for a couple knock-ons, forward passes and missed penalty opportunities …. all of which we will work on this week in preparation for the Renegade invasion.

Thanks to all the guys who paid their dues, sorted out their CIPP, trained hard in the mud and cold for the last four weeks, and gave it their all on Saturday to come away winners. I have never been prouder to be the member of any rugby club than I was yesterday, to be a member of this club and see the sacrifices made (both on and off the field) in order for our club to succeed. Let’s come back this week and train hard, play harder, and see where it takes us.

See you at practice,

Pete the C.
