The Knoxville Rugby Club extends an invitation to all area high school rugby clubs to participate in the 2007 Knoxville Rugby Touch Tournament to be held February 24th at Possum Park.

This tournament will use a toned down version of international touch.  This is to allow a more flowing and playable game with beginners. As you can see in the laws, there are a lot of rules that the players may not be familiar with.

Here are a list of major rules that will be enforced to allow the game to flow.

Object. The object of the game of Touch is for each team to score touchdowns

and to prevent the opposition from scoring.

Teams: Teams of 10 will compete with only seven on the field at any time. Unlimited interchange is allowed from the half way.

Time: Games will run for two ten minute halves with 2 minute half time.

Point’s value and scoring: Each try is worth 1 point. No conversions. Rules of how to score a try are the same as rugby.

In play rules:

  • Attacking team will be allowed 6 touches before turnover.
  • No kicking anytime. Any drop ball or ball that lands on the ground is a turnover.
  • Only one hand touch of any part of the body is necessary. Defender must call out that touch has been made.
  • Any minor infringement, knock-on or drop ball will be a turnover with a roll ball at infringement.
  • Any major infringement (offside, etc) will result in full penalty. Player taking penalty may run and be touched.
  • Major penalty and commencement of game must ensure players are a minimum of ten meters back to be onside.
  • In general play, 5 meters is all that is required.

Attacking Team. When a player is touched he must return to that mark and roll the ball under his feet. Another player must then pick up the ball to continue play. This player is known as the half. The half may pass or run with the ball. However, if touched, loses possession

      .

  • The defending team may attack as soon as the half touches the ball. The defending team must retreat five meters (or generally where the ref is standing) from the touched player before been able to touch an attacking opponent.

    Major rules left out:

The only major rules that we won’t enforce is when an attacking player gets touched and overruns their mark and then plays the ball. Usually, this should be a penalty. We will stop play and let them return to their mark to restart.

The other major rule that will slow the game down is when a player gets touched and then passes the ball on to continue play. Again, this is usually a penalty, but to let the game continue the attacking team will be stopped for a restart.

Overtime
Overtime results in a two minute sudden death period.  If neither team scores within the two minutes, each team will drop a player and play another sudden death period.  Players will continue to be dropped by each team, one by one, down to 3 players per side.
