EPISODE V: THE POSSUMS STRIKE BACK

A few days ago in a town far, far away ….

After a stinging defeat in Atlanta by the evil empire, the rebel possum forces were bruised, tattered, but never broken. We resumed our training on the swamp moon of Vestal, planned our strategies, and this weekend staged a bold attack on the industrial wastelands of our bitter rivals Chattanooga. We placed our trust in “The Eye of the Possum”,and inspired by the thundering runs of Andy the C and Scotty “Mad Dog” McCallum, the Knoxville Possums went on a 7-try rampage to rack up their highest score this season with a 39-10 victory over ‘Nooga.

Congratulations guys, we did it, our first DII win Smile

However, despite the scoreline, we still have a lot to improve on. Chattanooga did a good job of exposing some of our weaknesses and converting those opportunities into points, just like other teams have done. The difference this weekend was probably fitness, with our team scrambling in defense and supporting in offense for a full 80 minutes. It was certainly a nice change to be the team finishing the game in style with a try right at the full time buzzer. And as coach it’s nice to think that we can still improve a whole lot more … so get to practice and let’s git’r’done.

Thanks to Mike Weldon for providing halftime entertainment for both teams with “The Stub”. Like the Chattanooga player said .. “I’ve never seen anybody take a minute for pride before?!”. Now that I think about it, I never have either, so thanks Mike for letting us share that first in rugby history with you. If you don’t have any clue what I’m talking about, it means you weren’t at the game or at practice on Tuesday. Get your arse to practice and the games so that you can play your part in Possum folklore … just like Mike.

May the Eye of the Possum be with you,

Pete the C
Coach, Knoxville RFC

Knoxville 39 (Scotty McC 2 tries, Andy C 2 tries, Rick 1 try, Oscar and Scott A 1 try and 1 conversion apiece) – Chattanooga 10.
