The One That Got Away …

Just thinking about this game again makes me want to dry heave (for more than one reason). This was our first Division 2 game thanks to the weather-impaired players from High Country no-showing the week before, and we were as ready as we could hope to be after an eight hour road trip. It is a tribute to our commitment as a club that so many guys showed up for this game … I believe the final tally was 27 (if you include Fester Wink. Due to some late arrivals there were last minute selection changes, but as Cape Fear soon found out we field a very strong side no matter what. After putting “fear” into the Fear with a 45 yd penalty shot in the first minutes of the game, Josh “Hitman” Holt decided it would be much easier to score points by running in a try about five minutes later. And then just to prove his point, he came back again and this time slotted the 45yd penalty. I swear that I heard the Fear coach mumble something about “Tonya Harding” and “crowbar” at this point, but I can’t be sure. After another penalty we were ahead 11-0, and then the wheels started to fall off. Fear played well to come back, but with at least 10 unforced handling errors and no kicking game to speak of this game should have been ours. However, when fitness and miscommunication started to take its toll we let in a couple of soft tries … and that’s all she wrote. Cape Fear 17 – Knoxville 11. We played well for 60 minutes, but just couldn’t seal the deal. It was a heart breaker on the road, and in twelve months when Cape Fear are the ones facing the eight hour road trip to Possum Park we’ll be here waiting for our revenge.

Until next time little campers …

Yours with muddy balls,

Pete the C
Coach, Knoxville RFC

Ps. Thanks to “Swayze” and Sean Mohr for anchoring the Knoxville Boat Crew, and showing Cape Fear the true meaning of the word “chug”.

Man of the Match Honors
