Catholic Prevails at KRFC Touch Rugby Event

Knoxville Catholic survived a pool of 15 teams Saturday to capture the Cup Championship at the First Annual KRFC High School Touch Rugby Invitational hosted by the Knoxville Rugby Club January 28, 2006. The Irish overtook Central by as score of 3-1 after outpacing West’s A side in an exciting quadruple overtime semifinal match. Central advanced to the finals by defeating Carter in semifinal play.
Farragut’s A and B sides squared off in the Bowl Championship after the second side defeated Karns in the semi-finals. Farragut’s first side defeated Bearden in the semis to advance in the Bowl Bracket. Maryville B defeated a third Farragut side in to claim the Plate Championship.
Invitations to compete in the tournament were extended to all teams that participate in high school rugby as a part of the Smoky Mountain Athletic Club, an organization dedicated to promoting rugby in East Tennessee. The turnout and level of play for the inaugural event exceeded the expectations of tournament organizer and Knoxville RugbyClub captain Matt Noss. Said Noss, “Our main goal was to expose the kids to the game and help them kick off their training seasons. It was amazing to see them learn and improve so much in a matter of hours.”
With 11 high school teams, established college and adult men’s clubs, and a blossoming women’s club, the traditional full contact version of rugby has exploded in popularity in East Tennessee over the past four years, but the rules and intricacies of the touch game are still new to most players in the area. Noss, a native Australia, said that touch rugby is played by a wide array of people in his home country. “In Australia, everyone is out playing touch together, active men and women club players, high school boys and girls, old guys whose full contact careers are over. I’d love to see that happen here as well.”
